Tough defeat (0-5)

Real Betis falls in a high scoring match for Real Madrid

The incursions on their area and any shot did Betis a lot of harm. The style of play was well thought out to go up against a team such as Real Madrid but their reaction to plays in their own area shows that the team suffers in this aspect of the game. This added to the lack of solidity the team has in the opening minutes of matches. The team was already a goal behind in the tenth minute of the match for the umpteenth time this season. This is a hard burden for the green-and-white team which they do not seem able to shake off. Real Madrid's hallmark traits were on show from the moment the whistle blew. A counterattack by Madrid featuring the speed merchants Di María and Ronaldo. The Argentinian set up the ball for the winger who scored with a diagonal shot, blasted with his right foot, impossible for Andersen to save. Betis recovered. They had possession of the ball and were not having difficulties surviving; however, there was a new counterattack, Ronaldo on the right, Amaya, in a dangerous foul, brought the Portuguese player down. It seamed as if it was open day for the Real Madrid crack shots and the danger became palpable when Bale scored the second goal. Without playing excessively well Madrid was on a scoring rampage and had an easy time of it. Only Leo Baptistao tried to do things and worried the visiting defence somewhat, he started to raise the hopes of his team. The Brazilians centre did not connect with Rubén and they were not able to reduce the gap on the scoreboard. They let a golden opportunity slip by, but after 45 minutes of play Real Madrid did not. The Green-and-white defence did not manage to clear the ball well after two rebounds in the area and Benzema scored the third goal before the referee blew up the end of the first half. The second half started with two high shots by Cristiano Ronaldo, one off a direct free kick and the other on the run. His third attempt in a one on one Andersen managed to stop the Portuguese player's shot. Betis was staggering at this stage and somewhat disorganised. Madrid continued to attack with a thirst for more. Only occasionally did the Green-and-whites manage to cross the halfway line. Garrido tried to change the situation from the bench taking off Rubén and putting Vadillo on. But it was Madrid's afternoon for shots on goal, and Di Maria took centre stage. The wingers shot slipped into the goal to the left of Andersen. The Danish keeper had made some good saves but was not able to do anything with this one. This goal finished the match. It was only the 61st minute but Betis were left wanting but unable to react. They did not give up but the match was disagreeable for them because every time they looked at the scoreboard they saw an insurmountable mountain. They seemed to be just running after shadows, trying to avoid a fifth goal, which in the end they couldn't. Morata scored at the end of the match. It was the first match of the second round but the team from Heliopolis were not able to start their league comeback.
