Matilla: "It is an important match in which we can widen the gap with a direct rival"

"An away win will really boost our morale; the team is looking forward to getting a second win on the trot", said the Betis midfielder

The midfielder from Quereño was chosen to speak to members of the press today at the Luis del Sol Training Centre press room. Matilla reflected on the good spirits awoken in the team after a good performance against RC Recreativo de Huelva, which he hopes the team will maintain so that they can will win again this Sunday in the tie against Club Atlético Osasuna.

How are you physically?: “I trained today with the rest of the group. My ankle still has some limitations and there is some discomfort. I am hoping that the swelling goes away over the next two days and the pain goes too so that I can play on Sunday”.

A duel against a direct rival: “It is one of the most difficult grounds to play at in the Second Division. As it was in the First Division. You always look forward to the matches and this is a great match to play. I hope I will recover soon so that I can help the team”.

Last year's tie against CA Osasuna: “That was a different story. The team was having a run of results that we all remember. We all have bitter memories of what happened in the stands. Now our thoughts are in a different vein, with new hopes. We are going there with an aim to win, to get a second consecutive victory after an important one against RC Recreativo de Huelva. An away win would really boost our morale. They are going to be one of our direct rivals at the top of the league, so if we win we will widen the gap. There are three points at stake, but we have to have the right mindset against CA Osasuna who are direct rivals”.

Support for Julio Velázquez: “We all agree that we have the right manager, he trains us well throughout the week. Of course, we have yet to see in a match what we are seeing in the training sessions. In training it is clear that we are able to do much more. We are all with the boss, we all share the same opinion. We have to correct things, but we are all really pleased with him. There is a tremendous atmosphere in the changing room, we are really united. Even when things have not gone well, we have supported each other. We are training at a really high level, we are all believers in what the coaching staff is trying to do”.

Possible reinforcements for the midfield in the winter transfer market: “Any thoughts on possible signings does not affect me. November is yet to start so there is still a lot of time. We can do what we have to do with the players we have. If any new player comes it will be to the benefit of the team, so it will be welcome. And if no one joins the team, it really doesn't matter to me. I am really happy with my work. I am not affected by those who enjoy questioning what I am doing”.

Has Julio Velázquez been calmer this week?: “Well, this week I haven't been on the pitch much or close to him because of my injury. I wouldn't say it was a case of being calmer, more that he is happier. We had one of our best matches on Saturday, we showed a different side of us at a very difficult moment in which things were not going well for us. The team gave it their all and the boss was valiant. Thankfully everything worked out. If you want to call it being calm, we are calmer, but the key is for there to be happiness. In the end the results of what we are doing in training will be seen on the pitch”.

Are you aware that the fans, in addition to victories, want the team to play well?: “We know what players we have and their abilities, but we also know our limits, that needs to be said too. There is a great squad and our goal is to get promotion. The fans always want the best of us, that the team wins and entertains them. It is right for the fans to be critical. If any of us were in their shoes, we would do the same. If the fans can add satisfaction with their team to their personal lives then even better. We have to accept the criticism, it is our job. We are paid to work well and work hard. The team is tremendously ambitious, I am sure we will achieve our goal”.
