Mel: "It’s obvious that we are in a bad position to win the round, but there’s still one match to play”
“We had difficulties to connect between lines, to create plays and have possession”, stated the manager
Real Betis head coach gave a press conference after the Copa del Rey match against Sevilla. Pepe Mel talked about the match, the chances to win the round, and the importance of the fixture against Getafe CF in Liga BBVA.
Few chances during the match: “We see a match on the pitch and then it looks different when you watch again on TV. I want to watch it again to see if it was as you say.”
Starting eleven: “I choose the line-up that I think is appropriate. I may make mistakes, but I think about many things when I have to decide. I think about the players with physical problems or tired, and also about the match on Saturday, which is very important for us. That’s the reason for my decision.”
Problems to create chances on the rival’s end: “I didn’t want to substitute Petros so early but we were seeing he was about to be sent-off. We faced a team that played a good match. We had difficulties to connect between lines, to create plays and have possession. When we managed to do it, we weren’t bad. The problem is that it happened only a few times. That’s what we need to work and focus on.”
Chances to win the round: “We can’t say it’s 50/50. It’s obvious that we are in a worse position than when we started, but there’s still a match left to play. If we score first there, everything will change, starting from the mental state. We’ll go with everything on Tuesday.”
Consequences of the defeat regarding the match on Saturday: “The match in Getafe is very important for us. We want to finish the first leg of the league with more than 20 points. We wanted some players like Joaquín, Ceballos and Rubén to rest. We had to play bearing both matches in mind.”
Why did Adán not play?: “I care about my players, and I want all of them to feel important. We played in Gijon with a keeper and we won the round. If I don’t play him today, I’m sending a message telling that the other keeper is much better and that he’s never going to play. Dani Giménez is a good keeper. He deserves all my trust, as I show it to other players like Varela and Van Wolfswinkel. I’m happy for their attitude, but not with the score. Specially in the second goal.”
Is the match on Saturday more important than the one today?: “They’re the same, but we also thought about players that may be ready on Saturday. We tested Westermann yesterday to see if he could play today, but he wasn’t fit. Let’s see if he’s ready for Saturday. It’s the same with other players like Van der Vaart and Joaquín.”
Changes in the starting eleven: “We need all the players to be involved. It’s the only way. If you have 29 players but you only play with 12, the environment gets nasty and it’s an awful experience. We need to recover, the same as the other day.”
A victory in Getafe as a turning point: “We have a crucial match on Saturday. If we get a good result, it will be important for Tuesday too. That esteem state I talked about before can be changed if we end this streak.”
Meeting with the Chairman Juan Carlos Ollero: “I’ve read many funny things about that meeting, but I can say none of it is true. We talked about the future and this transfer window. They wanted to know how I feel. It was a long meeting, but mainly about players that may come or leave. It all remains as before the meeting, they didn’t tell me what I read on the media they told me.”
Critics from the fans: “They are free to do as they please. The feelings, I keep them to myself.”
Players esteem level: “Obviously bad, the performance goes together with the mental state. Nothing good comes when you don’t win. We need to acknowledge and change it. The match in Getafe is crucial because we can make that change.”
Chants from the fans: “I already said it the other day. Then I have a meeting with the Club and we’ll keep going.”
