Rennella: "We are in a good moment”

“We need to continue convinced of what we are doing”, says number ‘8’

Vincenzo Rennella spoke before the media in the press room at Luis del Sol Training Centre. The French-Italian striker showed the optimism that exist among the players after the last results obtained, but at the same time he sent a message of caution insisting in how important it is to keep working with the same excitement and without signs of relax.

First match in the starting eleven: “I’m happy I could play. I wasn’t an easy match, Rayo Vallecano is very difficult rival. The manager insisted in the defensive work of the entire team. We defended well and obtained a good result, and that’s what I take from it.”

11 points in 7 matches: “We are well because we won two matches in a row playing away. That’s a moral boost, we are a good team on the pitch. We defend and attack all together. I think we are in a good moment.”

The strength of the team, key for the results: “We must be cautious; we need to continue in this way. We are well, we have played difficult matches and we got good results. The team is the main thing, we have proven that is not easy to score against us. We need to keep growing step by step.”

How do you feel at a personal level?: “I played some  minutes in Valencia and against RC Deportivo de La Coruña. In the last match I was in the starting eleven. We know how football is, everything can change suddenly. I hope I can play more minutes and keep training hard so the manager can trust me.”

What is the goal of the team after this good beginning of the season?: “We need to think about the present. We are well but we need to go on. Bad streaks can come in the future but so far we are performing. We need to continue with this style of play and convinced of what we are doing.”

Defensive strength: “We have improved a lot in that sense. We are together on the pitch, leaving no open spaces for the rival. Real Betis has had a bad streak playing at Estadio de Vallecas. It was crucial to not concede goals there. And we have a guy in attack that scores every chance he has. We played a very complete match.”

Westermann: “He arrived during the preseason and took him a while to adapt. He is a great centre back and we are happy to have him with us.”

Two strikers in the starting eleven: “That’s a decision of the manager. Things can be changed during the matches, as the manager has done several times. His style is to play with two strikers. So far, so good, but it’s his decision. He chooses what’s better for the team.”

League break: “It’s the same for everyone. We’ll have time to rest so we can start next week full of energy. We are focused on the match against RCD Espanyol. Now we have a weekend off. We need to disconnect a bit to come back next week. We are already thinking about that match.”

What message does Pepe Mel send to the team?: “He is very calm. We need to continue in the same line. We’ve just won in two difficult stadiums and now we have a match at home to keep on. We are now facing direct rivals and we think about nothing else.”

Are you looking to finish in an European spot?: “We are at the beginning of October. That’s something to discuss in March or April. We just got promoted. It’s true that we are one of the biggest Clubs in Spain but we need to go step by step.”
