MATCH REPORT | Defeat against Benfica (2-1)

Sergio León scored his first goal for the team

Real Betis arrived in Estadio Algarve for the third test of the preseason. In front, the current Portuguese champion, Benfica. The game went underway with high pace, with Betis controlling the initial minutes. However, Benfica took the lead thanks to a defensive mistake made by the Green-and-Whites. Seferovic got the ball and lobbed over Adán. The goal hurt Betis and the team struggled for some minutes.

Step by step, Real Betis began to push forward and the goal came. A play on the right wing by Iván Navarro, who delivered a low cross. Joaquín was faster than the defenders and gave a back pass to Sergio León. The Cordovan scored in this way his first goal with the team. The forces levelled up both in the score and on the pitch as the teams were quite even. Benfica had a good chance just before half time through a shot by Rafa after yet another defensive mistake.

The second half started with Benfica taking advantage of another fail. Seferovic run towards the goal completely alone and beat Dani Giménez with a low strike. Betis was having a hard time to create plays and the rival had it easy to get to the box. However, in those moments when the team connected a few passes, they arrived to the other end with danger. Sergio León almost made his second after a great cross by Barragán but he didn’t connect a good shot.

Minutes were going by and Betis wanted to score, but they couldn’t find the way.  Fabián almost did it after a sensational individual play. After dribbling several opponents, he shot to find the post. The Green-and-Whites were at this stage of the game, much better than the rival, but the goal didn’t come. Actually, Benfica almost did it two minutes before the end with a free-kick to the crossbar.
