In response to questions about Francisco Varela's renewal in the presentation of Juan Merino as the new Betis B coach, Alexis Trujillo took a moment to comment on the state of the negotiations for the renovation of the wing back from Granada, a team member the technical secretary would like to retain as he would be an important player for the 2014/15 season.

Renovation: “In February Varela's agent was sent the proposed contract conditions. We have yet to receive an answer. We would like to count on him. Last week we intensified our proposal significantly. I spoke to the agent on four occasions last week and with the player with the intention of retaining his services and define the economic conditions of his contract. We're still waiting for a reply. Today we will make another attempt to keep the player”.

What type of contract has he been offered?: "We have explained to him that the contract that we have initially does not compare to the current reality or contemplate a salary reduction due to relegation; you have to realise that Varela would have a higher contract than other professional footballers in the first team. You have to realise that we must maintain the same line as the contracts we have with Caro and Carlos García. We are awaiting a reply. For the Club the most positive reply would be an affirmative one, as would like to see him continue with the team”.

If he were to accept the proposal, in which team would Varela play?: “In principle we would like him to play for Betis. Then it would depend on his level of play and where the coach in question would like him to be. As of today we cannot sign contracts which guarantee that players will be starters either in the first team or the reserves. In relation to the players that we have in each team we will see where each player will fit in”.

With these contracts is the footballer being held back?: “Nobody is going to hold anybody back. We would like to sign contracts that make for ambitious players. We want the players to be at their best. Then it will be the coaches who decide which team each player should be. In that way we will be convinced that they want to get better and give it their all on a daily basis”.
