Setién: “I’m proud of my players and the work they’ve done”
Press conference
Quique Setién has addressed the media at Mestalla Stadium after the match against Valencia CF.
Match analysis: "Goals are what matters. They are the key of the match. We had three or four chances that went just by the post and could have easily gone in. In such even games, that' what makes the score fall for one side or the other. We were good in the first half. Valencia only had options when we made a mistake. We recovered the ball quickly and managed it well. It's not easy against a team that defends so well like Valencia. In the second half we were not as good as in the first. We were a bit distracted at the beginning and the goal came. The siege we had them in the final minutes didn't work because we didn't score all the chances we had."
Strategy along the game: "The plan was the right one. We didn't stop attacking but we also tried to avoid their counterattacks because they are great at that. All the goals we conceded in the round came after mistakes we made. In regular plays that they had to build something, they didn't even get a chance. We had three really clear chances in the first half. If we could have scored them, the plan would have been perfect. We were also all right in the second half but we gave them more options because we were slower and sloppy for some minutes. I have to analyse the game thoroughly to see what happened at the beginning of the second half. However, we managed to have Valencia enclosed in their own half of the pitch almost for the whole game. It's not easy when you have so many players defending in front. The plan was correct because we didn't stop attacking at any point. If what we want is to create 20 chances and score 5, we don't have that ability. Valencia have potential in attack we don't have. But I'm really happy of the work done by the players and proud of them. Last year we got eliminated in the first round and now we've reached the semifinals. Last year we were not playing in Europe and we finished in the group without losing a single game. We had now an important challenge, which is fighting for the fourth place. The progression of this team is remarkable. This is the way. We are really disappointed because our fans deserved a final at their home and we couldn't bring it to them. We did what we could. I'm proud of my players and the work job they did."
Referee: "We lost the final in the first leg. And then there are two important plays. The first is in the first leg in the sixth minute. It's a play in which Junior gets to the base line and gets tackled by Garay after delivering the cross. Clear penalty. Today, their number 5 had a play in which he hit Lo Celso. He clears the ball but the hits him after. He has the cleats all marked in his chest. It's a violent play and it's a penalty. I'm not going to blame these two plays for the defeat. But they are obvious plays that the referee did not see or did not consider as such. But I'd like you to watch them."
