Setién: “This is a prestigious victory”

Press conference

Quique Setién addressed the media at San Siro after the Real Betis victory over AC Milan.

Prestigious victory: "It's an important victory for us. Not just because it means three points and that we get at the top of the table, but because it gives us some prestige after a few years out of Europe. We did a great game, specially in the first half. The second half was more open and the pushed more. Maybe you got the feeling that we were wasting time at certain moments. I don't like that. I have to speak to my players. They didn't do it on purpose because there are no directions in this sense. Pau told me ha had cramps. It wasn't an easy game in this place. If you believe that this is what happened, I apologise because we are not team that try to waste time or use weapons that are not merely football."

Match analysis: "AC Milan got surprised by our playing style. They want to press, we made difficult for them to create plays and we forced them to play long balls. It's much easier to recover the ball then. We were calmed on the ball. In general, we are managing the ball well in all the games and Milan struggled with that. We had today what we lacked in other games, which is getting to the other end with danger, score a goal and had several chances to score some more and the game closed at half time. Milan are a great team, we could see it in the second half. We were short of breath to keep pushing. They put a lot of people upfront, intense. We may have been better than Milan but I've always seen them as a great team."

A victory to be remembered: "This is my first time in Europe and things are working really well. The performance by the team in a place like this is to be remembered. I'm really satisfied because some things I plan happen on the pitch and that's great for our esteem and the players' satisfaction. Also, we can dedicate the victory to all those béticos who came and surely they'll remember, like us, this win."

Lo Celso: "He is a great player. He proved it today and we already saw it in previous matches. He's getting more confident. He's understanding what we want and, as many of his teammates today, has performed really well. He's been the cream of the crop in both goals. In the first, he provided the assist and the second goal is spectacular. The reward is for the whole team, the worked really hard and had a lot pf personality to move and have the ball. This will make them grow as footballers, as a team and it will make me a better coach."

Does this victory reinforce the playing style?: "I don't change depending on if we win or lose, I said it many times. We have an idea and we want to grow with it. If you look at the result in short term, there will be doubts, but not for us. We are really confident in what we do, we are sure. Sometimes, winning or losing depend on things you cannot control. The main thing is to play well because that way you have more chances of winning. We usually play better than worse and, since the competition started, we have been better than the rivals and have created more chances. A day like today is a boost, no doubt, but I can tell you that there's a conviction in the dressing room in what we do and it's solid, without cracks, as we are growing on a daily basis. It's true that we are not yet as bog as some want us to be. Sometimes things don't work out but, if you look at it with perspective, the Club is exponentially growing."

The team played more directly today: "We were more vertical because there were gaps. It's not easy to be direct when you have nine players in front defending almost inside the area. That wasn't the case today. Our opposition pressed and we got out of it. We don't play to the sides if we can do it to the front. There are not many rivals that play against us the way Milan did. They wait inside their box. It's really difficult to play that way because all the spaces are covered and you have to be very precise. If you analyse this game you'll see that it has nothing to do with Valladolid, our previous rival. In this way you can get to other end easily and give passes. The way the rival plays is crucial."

Confidence: "We never lost our confidence. It's important to have score two goals and realise that we have scored, at least, another two. Sometimes you're accurate, sometimes not. Today we had that inspiration, specially in Lo Celso. He also had another play that Reine blocked and another from Sergio León. We never refuse to be more vertical and, if we get the chance, we'll do it. What we don't want to do is to lose the ball. This way allows us to tire the rival and create the spaces you want to finish better. Football is not a science. One day you put it in the top corner, like today, and other you hit the post, like Castillejo did."

Playin style: "The last thing I told my players before going out was that you earn the prestige in places like this, managing the stress and having the personality necessary to control the ball as we always do. We had to forget about the environment and face the game like any other one, avoiding the added pressure of playing at San Siro against AC Milan. My players showed that personality. Some of them had the experience already and dome don't, but they did what we usually do. We have a playing style that they are assimilating more every time. The team is growing step by step and we still have things to improve. Because we were tired, we lose the form in defence at the end and it could have costed us all the good things we had done before. We won't change a thing. We'll keep pressing the rivals, we want to be brave, play on their side, be fun, and enjoy with the ball. It's our way of understanding this game. Our fans are happy and players are glad to be playing this way. That's why they give their best version."
