Real Betis defeated by Stoke City (2-0)
Despite several opportunities to equalise in the second half, the green-and-whites couldn't put the ball in the net.
This evening Real Betis faced an important challenge in the form of Bojan and Peter Crouch amongst others as they came up against Stoke City from the Premier League. As usual, Velázquez didn't field the same starting eleven that he has used in any previous matches, but in the first half he abandoned the use of pure wingers, putting Chuli, Rennella and Molina in attack, with a triple pivot in midfield to cover their backs formed by Nono, Matilla and Xavi Torres. An attack up the centre of the field was going well for the green-and-whites, but they were caught by the defenders who mounted a good counter attack. However, the strong start was turned around as the minutes went by and Stoke began to dominate the ball. Ireland and Bojan started passing up the wing and the red-and-whites were determined to get the ball past Adán. However, the home team had no clear opportunity and at minute 27 Chuli got his first attempt at goal. A good counter attack up the left wing gave Chuli the ball inside the area, but he couldn 't connect with Molina and a corner was given. Their chance was let slip and two minutes later a similar opportunity was successful, but this time the ball ended up in Antonio Adán's net. Bojan sped up the right wing and passed to Diouf who threatened to score, but it was Arnautovic's shot that put the ball in the net from the far side.
From that moment on, the home side were far more dominant, leaving Betis little opportunity to touch the ball. In the final minutes they had a chance to draw but it was the same story as before. Molina and Matilla set up a 1-2 that ended up at the feet of the player from Alcoy inside the area, but he failed to put it away in a one on one with Begovic after being left in an awkward position having squeezed through the two fullbacks. That was in minute 40, and four minutes later, a foul from Bojan against Bruno wasn't given and the forward gave Adán no chance to stop the ball and the Heliopolitan team were left 0 to 2 down at half time.
Betis played better in the second half but were still unsuccessful in the area despite several opportunities. Dani Giménez, Perquis (midfield), Álex, Cedrick, Rubén and Pacheco came on and only Molinero, Bruno, Casado (fullback), Xavi and Molina stayed on from the original eleven. A run of scoring opportunities started in the eigth minute when Cedrick gave Rubén an assist but he was unable to find the net. That marked the start of the best part of the match for Julio Velázquez's team. In the twelfth minute, an individual piece of play by Molina hit the woodwork and the rebound was picked up by Cedrick, but his shot also hit the post. The attempts kept coming and Rubén Castro's play from inside the area also failed to score in minute 18'. After putting the pressure on following the loss of possession, unfortunately Xavi wasn't rewarded with a goal. Betis never gave up though and kept on fighting to the end. In a final play inside the area, neither Molina nor Rubén nor Cedrick were able to pull one back. At the end of the match Betis suffered a loss that could have been avoided in the second half if only they had been luckier in the goal area.
