Mel: "I hope that in the next two matches we see the upsides, not the defects”
“I know we have been working hard this week, but I was expecting more today”, stated Real Betis manager
Real Betis Balompié head coach spoke before the media after the match against CD San Roque de Lepe (3-1). Mel gave his impressions about the defeat in the second friendly of the preseason and also answered some other topics.
Match against CD San Roque de Lepe: “I already didn’t like the match against Coria. I already said it and I repeat it now that we need the ability to attack on the wings. We don’t have it and we are a predictable team. Predictable teams are easy to defend and we are going to struggle in that sense. We have time to fix it.”
Reasons for the defeat: “It’s not an excuse, but we are in the preseason, the players are working morning and evening, and they’re tired. We’ll lose that burden step by step. Next week we play against Athletic Club de Bilbao; we’ll try to get the team fit and we’ll focus on the psychological side. We need to perform and go home satisfied, but I’m worried about the other facet, to have the ability to attack on the wings and make good crosses. All the chances we had in the first half, and were many, came from one-twos in the centre, none of them in the wings. That restrains how the team plays.”
You speak of lack of accuracy as one of the reasons for the defeat. Also in defense?: “It all goes together. We don’t finish our plays, we don’t have the ability to play in the wings to cross the ball or finish the play. We only have inner game, and it’s predictable easy to defend. We’ll have serious problems in La Liga like this. We need alternatives in the market to find that kind of player.”
When will new signings arrive?: “That’s not a question for me. I say what I think the team needs. We need that alternative, we need game in the wings. We needed it last year and we still need it this year because any of the players that have arrived so far play on the wings.”
Do you think that some players didn’t gave out 100 %?: “I don’t think so. I believe that the players have been working hard for many days, both mornings and evenings, that are tired. I guess that next week, with a different workload, we’ll perform much better against Athletic Club de Bilbao.”
Friendlies next week: “I hope the team will react better next week on a physical level, so we can see the upsides, not the defects. I’m confident it will happen next week. We have had a huge workload and it’s normal. It shouldn’t be an excuse, though, I was expecting more.”
