Calderón: "I'm sad because I have not achieved my objective but it has been an honour to train my team"

Gabriel Humberto Calderón said goodbye this morning before members of the press, after having announced the day before that he would not continue his professional link with Real Betis Balompié after 1 July. The Argentine manager will start a new professional venture probably in Arabia, he had words of thanks on his departure as manager of the Heliopolitan club. Calderón considers the decision made as "logical" and he gave his opinion of the kind of remodelling that the team needs this summer; he insisted that the new manager should have full backing when he arrives at the green-and-white club.

Farewell: "It has been an honour to coach Real Betis, my team. I am the figurehead and therefore for responsible for the team not having made a comeback in these last four months. I'm sad because I have not given the fans the joy that they deserve, and disappointed for not having fulfilled a complicated objective in which I firmly believed. I am grateful to the fans for their trust and support, to the players for their commitment and to the fans who always showed me their affection. I have always believed in teamwork and I've tried to bond with all the club's departments, who I also thank for the good times we've had. I understand that now it is time to start a project with the new manager who has 150% support. It is logical that I'm not staying. All that remains for me is to support Betis as a member and shareholder wherever I may be. I will always be available for Betis. I hope that the unity is achieved which will make us stronger and will allow us to return to the First Division quickly, a place where the fans deserve their team to be".

New manager: "The new manager must have 150% support from everyone. And because of the results that we have had we would never managed to get that. It made sense for me to step to one side to make way for another person who will have full backing in the situation the club is in".

Do you think there is anything that you have done that you could have changed?: "In football that was occurs to you after the match; even when you have won you think you might have done something differently. I have fought hard and put my life on the line. I have fought because I didn't want to feel powerless on the outside without being able to do anything. I have absolutely no regrets".

Why not continue on the bench?: "I was never thinking about next season. I said it after the 0-2 result against Sevilla FC in the UEFA Europa League. The manager needs full backing. If I were to continue now, there will be a lot of things in my favour but I wouldn't have everyone's support. I think it's better that the new manager has that full support".

Your worst moment with Real Betis: "The worst moment was when relegation was confirmed. The others were momentary moments of deception but the confirmation that we had not achieved our objective was the worst".

What did you do well over these months?: "I think there are a number of positive things, such as the team recovering emotionally. The worst thing is having managed to give people hope to later take it away again. To the fans that I owe so much it's terrible to do that to them".

Do you already know where you'll train the next season?: "It is true that I have advanced contacts in three different countries. Next week I have to make a trip to find out more details but there is nothing definitive yet".

Recommendations for Alexis Trujillo: "I have no recommendations to make. Alexis is perfectly capable and has competent group around him to help find the best solution".

Changes in the squad for the coming year: "I would make the necessary adjustments. I have already given Alexis my reports on each player. They are going to improve Betis and I'm available to help in any way I can. Making sweeping changes is not good, the squad is not bad at all; but because of the result the team had of the season under three managers changes have to be made. It is clear to me what needs improving, but not any sweeping changes".

Opinion of the job done: "I have peace of mind because I have done everything that was in my power to do. The results were not good but I am pleased with the quality of the work".

What does Betis need in the future?: "I have always spoken about unity. We have to be united. The unity obtained from working as a team makes you stronger. If we pay heed to personal interest, we're not doing Betis any good. Our fan base is one of the best in Spain and they continue to follow us even when we are relegated to the Second Division. That is the only option if we want to live up to the fans that we have got".

Will the fans' opinion of Calderón have changed after his time as manager?: "When I came here it was because I wanted to help Betis get out of the situation they were in. I never once thought how that affected me. I believe the fans have respected and appreciated what I have tried to do. I am grateful for the support I still have despite not having achieved my objective".

Renovation of the team: "When I was asked which players out of the whole team to renovate I gave my opinion internally about what might be necessary. I never got into the economic demands or the club's financial situation. I simply suggested, like I did with Amaya, that his renovation will be positive. Then the decision is made between the player and the club".
