Real Betis show two different faces in the match against Fiorentina (1-2)
Real Betis have a lot of work ahead of them after losing to a fierce rival in their presentation match against ACF Fiorentina. Although the first team started off poorly in the first half, their performance in the second half was far more promising. It goes without saying that much support for Betis was on evident tonight at the Villamarín Stadium. Fans of the green-and-whites have yet again demonstrated their loyalty and turned up to watch their team despite it being a Monday in August and the fact that the match was televised. Whilst there may still be elements of the team yet to gel together and parts that need oiling, the team has demonstrated it's ability to fight back. Real Betis fielded a 4-4-2 formation, with Perquis playing midfield again alongside Xavi Torres. Early on in the match play was bouncing between both ends. But bit by bit the Italian team took control. The best opportunity for the Betis team came from Molina, but Rusani was able to stop his low shot at goal. From that point onward Viola dominated the game. With attacking play and Joaquín in great form, the Italians found it easy to get close to Adán's goal. Vargas and Babacar took Montella's team into the lead, and at half time the Italians had a comfortable advantage, leaving the Betis fans frustrated with their team. Velázquez brought on a lot of subs in the second half, but kept the lead scorer of the pre-season on the field. And indeed it was Rubén who had the first opportunity of the second half. Rubén took a shot at goal, but Rusanu blocked it; afterwards Rubén asisted Rennella whose shot was deflected. It was on their third attempt that they managed to score and close the gap. Once again Rubén, intensely committed, moved down the left wing and found Matilla free on the edge of the box, his pass enabled the Manchegan player to put the ball in the back of the net.
The goal gave Betis a new lease of life as they tried to complete their comeback and the fans showed their appreciation. Far more lively and with renewed vitality, Velázquez's team spent more time in attack desperately striving for their second goal. Chuli came closest to scoring but his shot went wide. Xavi Torres also took several long shots at goal. Montella chose to share out the opportunities and brought on Cuadrado and Mario Gómez. However, they failed to rattle Betis who, despite being unable to reach a draw, still ended up on a more positive note.
