Disaster at Vicente Calderon (5-0)
A harsh defeat for Real Betis at the Vicente Calderon Stadium against Atlético who were superior from the 13th second of the match. Betis returns from Madrid having conceded five goals and with plenty of room for improvement in the forthcoming matches against Levante on Thursday and Malaga on Sunday.
Betis started the game in the worst way, a failure in the defensive line paved the way for Óliver Torres's goal in the 13th second. The early advantage for Atletico Madrid allowed Simeone's team to hang back in their own half and wait for opportunities to strike hard with counter-attacks. Atlético had several scoring opportunities, almost all of them featuring Diego Costa. The full backs' intervention and Sara's skill at the end of the first half put paid to the Brazilian striker's attempt to score the second goal for the home team. Betis was having great difficulty in getting further than three quarters of the way up the pitch, creating very little danger.
In the second half Andersen came on to replace an injured Sara and Jorge Molina substituted Reyes. The second half didn't start well for Betis either. Villa sentenced the game in less than a quarter of an hour. A crossing shot from the area and a header from a cross from the left gave Atletico a clear advantage on the scoreboard. Time was running out but there were still two more goals for the home team. The fourth by Diego Costa and Gabi scored the fifth in extra time. Betis played really badly at Vicente Calderon. Betis has dropped to the relegation area of the table and now has to focus on next Thursday's match against Levante.
