Maybe the same happens in derbies as in finals; you do not play them, you win them. And that is precisely what Real Betis has done today, more so when you consider that the round is more like a 180-minute match. Their performance may not have been as brilliant as on other occasions, or as dynamic, but it worked and victories are measured by the goals scored. The match did not start well for the green-and-whites because in the first piece of play Perquis failed to clear a ball and Bacca ended up in a one on one against Adán, this was the start of the Madrid goalkeeper's recital. A tremendous save thwarted the Colombian's attempt on goal but it was to be repeated by the same players but this time a header. Adán gave Betis all the confidence they needed for a match like this. From that moment on Calderón's team got into the match and started to make advances on Beto's goal. If that worried Sevilla it fortified Betis. The green-and-white's first arrival in the area ended in a goal by Leo Baptistao in the 14th minute of the match. The play was initiated by Lolo Reyes gaining possession in the midfield and passing it on to Juanfran. The winger got to the edge of the area, lifted his head and he placed the ball perfectly for the Brazilian to hammer it home with a header. Sevilla responded immediately and Emery's squad put their all into pulling back. It was the home team's time to feel the pinch whilst the visitors were comfortable in defence. As the minutes went by Sevilla's morale grew but Antonio Adán's was to grow even more. First he stopped an equaliser by Bacca who was beginning to see a giant task ahead of him. Then he firmly dealt with Sevilla's free kicks and corners. Betis was not having a good time and were just defending; but then in a counterattack Cedrick came close to scoring the second of the match, had Beto not stopped his shot off a centre by Juanfran. After that piece of play the game got a little crazy and Vitolo's reply almost levelled the match. The Heliopolitan team was in need of a halftime rest but before the conclusion of the first act Adán saved the day again stopping an attempt by Reyes. Betis only seemed to be affected in the last quarter of an hour but they were able to control those key moments in the match and were in the lead as the went in for half time.

The dynamics that marked the start of the second half did not have the best soundtrack and the script continued as it had at the end of the first half, with Sevilla in control of the match. There was just one exception, the first scoring opportunity was for the Betis side but Baptistao failed to finish off a clear one-on-one with Beto. Once again Sevilla started to cause trouble in Adán's area with a piece of play by Gameiro who was not able to get in a shot. Then the forward failed to succeed with a header which slipped over the crossbar. Calderón gave a breath of fresh air to the team with some movements from the bench, Salva went on for Rubén and Vadillo for Cedrick. The changes could not have worked better because the third time the player from Almeria touched the ball he beat Beto and put it in the net. It was almost a repetition of the first goal, Lolo Reyes gained possession and set it up for Salva who spun round in the area and drove it in to the net, putting the second goal on the scoreboard. Lolo was injured in the play and had to be substituted by Amaya who took on a defensive midfield role. From that moment on Betis knew how to play out the match and did not allow their rival any clear scoring opportunities. The closing stages of the second half and the extra time given were not necessary as the result was clear. Betis will go down in history as the first ones to win a Sevillian European derby and for striking first and harder in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League Round of 16.
