Garrido: "I understand that the fans are not happy with my contribution and whistle"

The Real Betis Balompié coach offered the post match press conference a few minutes after the end of the game against Real Madrid which culminated in a resounding defeat for the Green-and-whites, 0-5. This trip up, which damages the team and their morale, needs to be patched up immediately so they can continue believing in the team's salvation, was analysed by Garrido in which the efficacy of Carlo Ancelotti's team in the first half of the match proved to be decisive.

Opinion of the match: “Out strategy was similar to that of last year's match here in which Betis won 1-0. Real Madrid proved to be highly effective in the first half, in which they scored with their first two shots on goal. Being 0-2 down halfway through the first half against such a team that makes a come back so hard was key. In the second half Real Madrid knew that the match was won and we were frightened that there was going to be a festival of goals. It's hard to play in those circumstances. They were the better team and deserved to win, but the fact that the first two shots went into the net made it really difficult for the team to react”.

How does the team feel after the match?: “Obviously it was no boost to the morale. They won by a large margin. The first two goals totally dismantled everything. Now we have to work to prepare for the next match”.

Why didn't the team stay on the pitch at the end of the match?: “We were there for less time than on other occasions. When I got to them they were already going in and we were not able to do it”.

Do you still believe in salvation?: “A lot of things need to be changed such as competing better and many other things to improve the team's performance. The message that there are still 18 matches is still valid but there has to be a vast improvement for the next match”.

Albeit the coach, wouldn't another change on the bench be better?: “The coach has already been changed. To date the change in coach has not resulted in anything positive for the team. I am the coach and I am working so that the team can pull the situation around. It is the Board of Directors who decide, all I am going to do is keep working”.

Would you understand it if you were dismissed?: “You shouldn't ask me those questions. I am not going to give my opinion on decisions that other people have to make, the Board in this case. We have to accept criticism and the resulting decisions. We have to keep calm and try to make our work effective so the team improves for next weeks match”.

Complaints about you on the stands: “You have to accept that. These situations form part of a coach's job description”.

Chants in favour of Pepe Mel: “I understand because he was a well loved coach here. I think it is a good thing that they support and respect him. I understand that at the moment they are not happy with what I have done for the team. We have not managed to improve the situation that was already negative”.

Rubén Castro's substitution: “The match was an uphill battle. I decided to field another player who would work the wing more”.

Are you tired of things going against you?: “I am not happy obviously. There has been a succession of adversities. I believe we have to take them in our stride and work on understanding how to improve”.
