MATCH REPORT | Real Betis get their smile back (0-1)
Real Betis Balompié got three crucial points on Sunday after beating RC Celta at Balaídos Stadium. The team was superior to the rival throughout the whole game and finally got the victory with a late goal from Jesé, his first as Green and White.
Betis started well in the game with the clear intention of controlling it. Canales and Lo Celso moved constantly between lines, trying to open spaces for the team. In this way, Jesé had the first chance with a left-footed effort that Rubén deflected wide. Celta were defending with all their men on their half of the field, trying to close gaps and counterattack if they had the chance.
The first for the home side came after half an hour, when Maxi Gómez got the ball unmarked inside the area but missed the target. Betis replied immediately after but the shot from Carvalho from the edge of the box went millimetres over the bar. The final stage of the first half was open with options for both teams but no clear chances.
Early in the second half, Francis had to leave injured when a rival fell awkwardly on his leg. Tello took his place and had an occasion straight away. The winger made a one-two with Guardado but shot wide in front of the keeper.
Real Betis increased their pressing rate and started to accumulate more chances. Tello, quite active since he came on, created a good play on the left and delivered a good cross that jesé could not strike. A minute later, Joaquín cleared the ball after a mistake in dfence that could have been costly.
The game went to the most intense stage so far and Betis seemed determined to take the three points. The Green and Whites created an identical play like the previous chances, this time with Lo Celso and Mandi as protagonists. Finally, the reward arrived. Tello got himself inside the area and shot, but Rubén saved it. Jesé got fast to the rebound and tapped it in. The VAR checked the play as the line man had raised his flag for offside, but Tello was onside and the goal was awarded.
