Oscar Cano: "The key is to score in the away match, so we're going to go all out for the match"
"Every time there have been setbacks or difficult circumstances this team has managed to pick themselves up", proclaimed the Betis B coach
Once it was known that CD Anguiano was going to be the first obstacle on this new route for Betis B to gain promotion to the Second Division B of Spanish football, Oscar Cano attended members of the press to give his first impressions of the team from Rioja. The coach from Granada also mentioned some aspects pertaining to yesterday's match against UCAM Murcia CF, a match that left the team embittered but able to recover from this setback convinced that in the end they will achieve their coveted prize and overcome the two knockout rounds that Betis now has on the horizon.
CD Anguiano, next opponent in the contention for promotion to the Second Division B: "They finished fourth in Group XVI. We know how the ground lies. They have done well in their group scoring a lot of goals and conceding very few for a Third Division team. The Rioja Group is a demanding one, so it will be a tricky match as evidenced by the fact that they have eliminated the team that finished third in the Balearic Islands".
The second leg match against UCAM Murcia CF came with the need to make a comeback. Do you wish to avoid a repetition of the same situation in this match?: "The vast majority of the players we have had never had the experience of competing in a play-off. It is true that in the second leg we managed to effectively correct things that were provoked by Carrasco's style of play and other errors in the first leg. The wing-backs defended really well I don't remember Montoya having to get too involved. The second leg was better than the first. Hopefully we will continue to improve progressively as we go on, and that those situations that have gone against us will be turned into positive ones because we will have learned from them".
What is the team's morale like after yesterday's game?: "They are a very special group. This season they have had to overcome some serious setbacks. The dimensions of this Club means that there is a lot of pressure. Every time there have been setbacks or difficult circumstances this team has managed to pick themselves up. I believe and I truly hope that it will happen again. We have to look at this as if it were a process with three knockout rounds. We have got through the first one without being eliminated and our options are still intact. It is just another experience from which we have to gain something positive. In order to be more optimistic and competitive we should not commit mistakes".
The first match will be at a small ground where the crowd with very close to the players: "Until we get there and see the sort of pressure the home crowd is putting on us we cannot say what exactly is going to happen. If there is anything in the Third Division that is grounds with the crowd up close and actively supporting. If we're talking about fans and their commitment, then they have no advantage. We were amazed and perplexed at the response from the crowd yesterday. If the pressure and the support from the crowd were a determining factor then the balance would tip very much in our favour".
What will be the team's strategy in the first leg?: "We're not really into strategies. The fact that we are a reserve team has some special implications. We have to take advantage of the energy of these young players and their desire to launch their career. They are always thinking about the goal they have in front of them. It would make no sense to try to protect something that they don't have yet. We have to go out to win using the skills that our players have and the corresponding lights and darks. The circumstances will indicate how we must proceed. Scoring a goal in the away match is important. We hope that these goals will ultimately provide us with the victory. It should not be said that there is much difference between how we play at home or away. You have to go out there to win".
It will be a long journey, would you have preferred another rival?: "We had no preference. What happened in the first round clearly tells us that what you could consider as a below par performance is really a lack of experience. We know a lot of teams who are in the draw with us and we know what their potential is. There are teams with the same ability yet they have achieved results which were surprising because of this inexperience that we are talking about. We shall try to make the journey as comfortable as possible. Given the distance it would be ideal to be able to train somewhere when we arrive".
At this stage in the season, does it matter match where each team finished in their respective leagues?: "We were first in extremis. Anyone in our group could have been champion, even AD Ceuta had options. The same was true in other groups. Often the difference in points between the first team and the rest of their competitors does not have much to do with the weakness of the rest of the teams but with their own strength. There are some groups with teams like UCAM de Murcia for example who have a much higher potential compared to their rivals. That doesn't mean to say that the other teams are not any good. There have been surprising results in the previous round. With CD Alcalá's offensive potential, their most significant characteristic, nobody would have thought that they weren't going to score a single goal in the knockout round. This has nothing to do with a bad performance but that any of the teams has the competitive level to take on any of the others face-to-face. We should bear in mind that there is no difference in playing a team that was first one was fourth. Those who were first have the chance of getting direct promotion. Half of the teams that were first in the group are already in the Second Division B. It is the only advantage of being group champion but it isn't a free ride to promotion".
