MATCH REPORT | Not our day (5-1)

Emerson scored for the team

Real Betis got badly defeated tonight by Villarreal CF. The game was quite even for almost all of it, until the home side got awarded a penalty. Then, the Green and Whites broke down completely and had a terrible end of the match.

Intense and quick beginning of the game, with both teams trying to attack from the start. Betis had two approaches in the first five minutes, but the shots from Iglesias and Álex Moreno did not go on goal. However, the best so far came in the 10th minute and was for the locals. Cazorla delivered a great cross leaving Peña alone in front of the keeper but Robles made a sensational save.

Villarreal had taken a step forward now and were attacking more. Betis, though, started to have more possession as minutes went passing by and, halfway through the first half, had the ball for longer than their rivals. However, the game was quite open and even if Betis seemed to control more, both sides had options. Ekambi scored for the locals in the 32nd minute, but he was clearly offside and the goal was disallowed.

The next occasion was for Canales with a shot from the edge of the box that Asenjo saved. Villarreal scored soon afterwards in a corner kick that Ekambi headed in. Álex Moreno almost answered a minute later but Asenjo made a good save.

Without changes in any of the teams, the second half went underway. Two minutes had passed when Betis managed to tie the game up. Emerson received the ball inside the box, on the right side, and produced a great shot that took a slight deflection on a defender and went in.

The game was quite even in all senses, quite open. The next opportunity was for Joaquín, who made a good run from the midfield and finished with a strong shot that Asenjo deflected wide. The Villarreal's keeper also denied Carvalho a couple of minutes later after a great move from the Portuguese.

In the 67th minute, after a play where nothing seemed to happen, the VAR advised the referee and he checked the play and decided Bartra had made a penalty on Chukwueze. Cazorla scored from the spot. Hard blow for Betis, that now were struggling. In this way came the third for Villarreal and second for Ekambi.

Betis wanted to react but seemed to be mentally out. Ontiveros almost scored the fourth but hit the post instead. Moreno did it in a lethal counterattack in the added time. There was still time for the locals to make even more harm, as Chukwueze scored the fifth.
